Indigenous Knowledge and Development
Monitor, 1993
We are very happy to present you with the first issue of the Indigenous Knowledge and Development Monitor. The Monitor, which absorbs CIKARD News, is the newsletter of and for the international community of people who are interested in indigenous knowledge. This issue is the first in a series of three to be published in 1993. It is a double issue, since the one originally planned for October 1992 was not published. This new journal provides a forum through which the Indigenous Knowledge Resource Centres that have already been established at national, regional and international levels can interact with the many other individuals and institutions that are interested in the role that indigenous knowledge can play in truly participatory approaches to sustainable development. This interest in indigenous knowledge is very much in line with the reorientation of policy which several international development agencies have introduced on the basis of Agenda 21, the global programme of action adopted at the Earth Summit, held in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992.
The Monitor is a publication of and for the international Indigenous Knowledge community, which is made of scientists with various backgrounds, and individuals and institutions active in the development sector. We expect the flow of information to come from this community itself, with the corresponding editors stimulating the process.
The Monitor is produced by the Centre for International Research and Advisory Networks (CIRAN), in close cooperation with the Centre for Indigenous Knowledge for Agricultural and Rural Development (CIKARD) of Iowa State University, and the Leiden Ethnosystems and Development Programme (LEAD) of Leiden University. The three issues in 1993 will be provided free of charge thanks to a grant from the Netherlands Organisation for International Cooperation in Higher Education (Nuffic), the Netherlands. Whether or not it will be necessary to charge for annual subscriptions after 1993 will depend on external funding.
We welcome your comments and ideas and will do our best to share them with the global network of Monitor readers. Already this network includes some 3000 people in 130 countries.
