The system and the soil
A 50-minute documentary film (1992) on agriculture in Benin. Key issue is the gap between farmers' perceptions and the official approach of the CARDER, a governmental organization trying to modernize agriculture. Farmers seem reluctant to change. Contrary to CARDER's point of view, the farmers cling to their traditional way of farming, in which the oil palm is essential. The film introduces farmer Tadegla Tohouede and his two wives. Step-by-step the film shows Tadegla's reasons for not complying with CARDER, thus focusing on the important role of indigenous knowledge. Two development projects try to bridge the gap between CARDER and the farmers: PEMR, a project oriented towards human resource development; and REMR, a project based on the farming-systems research approach. The film shows the project workers' attitude towards the farmers' knowledge and their oil-palm cropping system. The documentary film gives a highly informative analysis of Beninese agriculture; it provides an independent and in-depth view of the role of local knowledge in rural development. Costs per video tape Dfl 300 (VAT and shipping costs included). Please indicate the television system (PAL, NTSC, or SECAM) and language (French or English) preferred.

Inuit environmental knowledge
The Inuit Environmental Knowledge (IEK) Display and multi- media presentation are designed to foster a wider understanding of the important role indigenous environmental knowledge plays in the
sustainable development and management of the Inuit's fragile environment and natural resources.
The Inuit Environmental Knowledge display shows an example of an Inuit environmental management system, a research programme that has been recording and analysing Nunavik Inuit environmental knowledge for the last 12 years in northern Quebec.
The multimedia display entitled Inuit Environmental Knowledge in the Service of Mankind involves the marriage of maps and text data with voice, music, graphics, photos, video and satellite images. It describes a model of an IEK management system and how Inuit environmental knowledge is being used in the circumpolar world as well as for mankind in general.
