International Forestry Resources and Institutions (IFRI)
The Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis at Indiana University is
developing an International Forestry Resources and Institutions (IFRI) Database. It is
meant to serve scholars, programme planners and government officials. It will address
the diversity of both forest products and their users and uses, and will link social and
natural science issues. The database will be available in 1994.

The Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis at Indiana University has
developed a Nepal Irrigation Institutions and Systems (NIIS) Database.
The database is set up as a tool for analysing data on common property institutions.
It presently stores information on 127 Nepalese irrigation systems. An initial analysis
indicated that farmer-managed systems performed better in terms of agricultural
productivity than agency-managed systems.

Communal forest resource management
FAO's Community Forestry Unit is (among other things) involved in the collection
and dissemination of local knowledge through the database it is developing in
collaboration with the University of Indiana. The database is global and includes
information on local knowledge and practices regarding forest management, among
other things. The database was field-tested in Bolivia, Uganda and Nepal. At present,
areas of these countries are being identified where case studies will be conducted for
the purpose of gathering data on communal forest resource management.
