Call for information
Remedios caseros
My name is Annette Sandoval. I've written a book entitled Homegrown Healing: Traditional Home Remedies from Mexico, to
be published by Putnam/Berkeley later this year. In Mexico, folk medicine coexists with modern science. Although the two
institutions are respected, medical facilities are not always the most convenient choice. Much of the population utilizes the
healing methods practised by the local curanderos (healers) and yerberos (herbalists). For centuries, these adept individuals
have been curing ailments of the body and, just as important, the soul.
The book deals with both common and unusual ailments, and physical and emotional afflictions. It then gives instructions for
preparing and administering the most effective treatments. As I researched the book, I realized that there are many remedies
that have not been documented. I intend to do something about this, and am asking you to help me to keep this rich tradition
from fading away. I would appreciate any information or suggestions about remedios caseros which I may incorporate into my
next book. A portion of the proceeds from each book will go to several non-profit organizations, including the National Latina
Health Organization.
