Database

CIRAN is updating its database
The Indigenous Knowledge and Development Monitor has been published since 1993. The publication and its network of subscribers have become an important forum for exchanging information and sharing experience related to indigenous knowledge. To facilitate this vital networking, CIRAN has placed all the subscribers in a special IK database. At the moment, this international IK network consists of some 3000 persons and institutions in 130 countries.
In October 1998 CIRAN set out to bring the IK database up to date. Everyone registered in the database received a letter and a print-out of their present entry, with the request that they check it for accuracy. Complete and correct data will make it easier for individual network members to establish interesting new contacts, and will also enable the CIRAN staff to make sure that all subscribers continue to receive their copies of the Monitor.
Since more and more organizations—such as the UN, the IDRC, the World Bank, CIDA, and CGIAR—are acknowledging the importance of IK and supporting activities in this area, CIRAN is encouraged to improve its services to the IK network. This is why the IK database, besides being updated, is also being adapted to meet the growing needs of the future. The database will now be split in two: one part has only names and addresses for the mailing list, and the second contains information about the expertise available within the network. The second especially will increase the benefit of network membership, making it easier for members to contact other members for specific purposes. CIRAN will also be able to search the database when someone is needed to referee an article or write a book review for the Monitor, for example. CIRAN wishes to assure the network members that the database absolutely will not be used for commercial or political purposes or to recruit funding.
Any readers who have not received the letter and questionnaire, or who need more information, are asked to please contact: CIRAN secretariat, Nuffic, P.O. Box 29777, 2502 LT The Hague, the Netherlands. Tel.: +31-70-4260 321. Fax: +31-70-4260 329. E-mail: ciran@nuffic.nl
