Alies Rijper is project editor on human security at The Broker. She also works for NGOs ICCO & Kerk in Actie on Disaster Risk Management and Conflict Transformation, with a focus on Eastern Congo. Alies studied Conflict Studies and Human Rights in Utrecht and took part in the Advanced Master in International Development programme in Nijmegen. She did fieldwork in Burundi on non-state security provision and Security Sector Reform for her first Master’s, and she concluded the AMID programme with a paper on broadening the definition of ODA to include security-related expenditures. Alies will commence PhD research into police development in fragile states at Durham University in January 2014. Previously she worked for the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Policy Coherence for Development and Global Public Goods. Her fields of interest are human security, statebuilding and international development.
