Kristoffel Lieten

Kristoffel Lieten (Belgium, 1946) has worked extensively on political developments in South Asia and on issues related to development sociology. He is the Child Labour Studies chair at the University of Amsterdam and at the International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam. Lieten is also the director of the IREWOC foundation (Institute for Research on Working Children). In addition to several books on development issues in South Asia, he has written and edited several books on children: Child Labour. Policy Perspectives (2001); Small Hands in South Asia (2004); Children around the World. Child Rights and Child Reality (2004), Children, Work and Labour. Glimpses from India (2005), Children, Structure and Agency. Field Realities across the World (2008), and Child Labour’s Global Past (2009). He is on the editorial advisory board of several journals and is a frequent commentator on Asian Affairs in the Dutch media.

The struggle against child labour is showing results. But the consensus is now being attacked from two sides: abolish all child labour versus there is nothing wrong with child work.
