Ellen Lammers

Ellen Lammers is an independent Researcher and Writer, located in Amsterdam. She received her doctorate in anthropology from the University of Amsterdam. Her PhD thesis (cum laude) is based on several years of field research in Uganda and deals with young men’s experiences of war and displacement. Ellen is a former graduate (medical anthropology, distinction) of the School of Oriental and African Studies in London. Ellen has published on forced migration and war, the ethics and politics of research, and a wide range of development and environmental issues. She previously worked for the Broker as Research editor for The Broker Core Team. In addition to her work for The Broker, she was partner of the research bureau WiW - Global Research Reporting.

Welcome

Today is a milestone for The Broker. Our 25th magazine has been snail-mailed to subscribers world wide this morning, featuring a 16-page special report on the future of EU-ACP relations. And, yesterday evening the proverbial switch was turned to make our completely new website go live! And thus: Welcome.

Lives in transition

The recent revolution in Egypt introduced long-awaited change in the country. But plenty of challenges lie ahead. In its effort to create a tolerant society that lifts the entrenched social, political and religious divides, the human rights movement should take up the plight of the many refugees living in Cairo. Gasser Abdel-Razek, country director of the Africa and Middle East Refugee Assistance (AMERA) in Egypt, talks about the challenges facing human rights organizations in Egypt in their endeavour to help refugees in these times of political uncertainty.
