Kees Biekart (Netherlands) is Associate Professor in political sociology at the Institute of Social Studies (ISS), the Netherlands, and the convenor of the MA specialization Politics of Alternative Development (PAD). His area of expertise is NGOs, social movements, civil society and foreign aid, in particular in relation to Latin America. He is a co-editor of the journal Development and Change. Before coming to ISS he worked as a research co-ordinator at the Transnational Institute in Amsterdam, and as a guest lecturer at a number of Dutch, German and Spanish universities. He obtained his MA in International Relations (cum laude) from the University of Amsterdam in 1989, where he also completed his PhD in Political Science (cum laude) in 1999. He has served as the President of the Netherlands Association for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (NALACS) and is a Fellow and a Board Member of the Transnational Institute. He co-ordinates the Knowledge Sharing Network on Civil Society Building between ISS and Hivos.
