Andrew Berg is Assistant Director and chief of the Development Macroeconomics Division in the IMF’s Research Department. Previously, he was chief of the Regional Studies Division the African Department as well as mission chief to Malawi. He first joined the IMF in 1993 and spent several years in the Research Department and the Department of Strategy Policy and Review. He has also worked at the U.S. Treasury and as an associate of Jeffrey Sachs. He has a Ph.D. in Economics from MIT and an undergraduate degree from Harvard. He has published articles on, among other things, the sources of sustained growth accelerations, the macroeconomics of aid, and the use of early warning systems for predicting currency crises. His current research agenda includes monetary policy, debt sustainability analysis, and the management of natural resource wealth in low-income countries.

Inequality and the sustainability of growth

It is a big mistake to separate analyses of growth and income distribution. A rising tide is critical to lifting all boats.
