Sothy Khien
Sothy Khieng is Senior Research Fellow at Cambodia Development Resource Institute (CDRI) and Adjunct Lecturer at the Royal University of Pnomh Penh. Sothy Khieng was a doctoral researcher in Organization Sciences at the VU University Amsterdam and a Visiting Research Fellow at Griffith University. His research is on “Local NGOs balancing between social value creation and profit-making: the dawn of social enterprises?” He has written a number of publications on nonprofit organizations, economics and health. He received his MA in International Development Studies from Ohio University.
In their search to become more financially self-reliant development NGOs are experimenting with social entrepreneurship. Many are doing this to strengthen their financial situation, but social entrepreneurship can do much more and opens up new ways to help poor communities. However, NGOs embracing social entrepreneurship face risks of being diverted from their missions and excluding intended beneficiaries.
