Hebe Verrest is a Human Geographer, specialised in developing countries. Her research concentrates on small to medium sized cities in the Caribbean, in particular, on the issues urban poverty & development, entrepreneurship, livelihoods and governance.
Since 2010 she is assistant professor at the Department of Geography, Planning and International Development Studies of the University of Amsterdam. Her PhD focused on Home-based Economic activities (HBEAs) of low-income groups in Paramaribo and Port of Spain. Currently she works on a research into urban livelihoods, the role of credit and savings, in particular, and into governance and exclusion in medium-sized cities.
The problems experienced by microfinance are a good example of what is needed to achieve an inclusive economy. For example, it tends to be blind to social and psychological costs.
