Alies Rijper is project editor Human Security at The Broker. She has an MA in Conflict Studies and Human Rights from Utrecht University and completed the Advanced Master in International Development (AMID) programme of Radboud University in Nijmegen in 2012. She has research experience in Burundi, where she did fieldwork on non-state security provision and Security Sector Reform. She concluded the AMID programme with a paper on broadening the ODA-definition to include security related expenditures. Alies will commence PhD research into police development in (post)-conflict societies at Durham University in January 2014.

Previously she worked for the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Policy Coherence for Development and Global Public Goods (2012) and the Great Lakes Region, development cooperation and political affairs (2010, internship), and for ICCO & Kerk in Actie on capacity building and Disaster Risk Management in Bukavu, Eastern Congo. Her main fields of interest are human security, statebuilding and (new forms of) international development.
